Glass so Far

Today is actually day 3 with Glass (if you count the day I picked them up). Getting my Glass unit was an adventure all it's own. I am about to WOW you with my magical tale of Wonder and Amazement (not really).

On Wednesday I, and my dear friend Angela, left from her house in Brattleboro, VT and began our adventure. We bopped along and discussed the secrets of the universe, as women are wont to do when you men-folk are not around. All the things we keep from you dudes, yep... we talked about that.

And then, before we knew it (3.5 hours later)... we were there!

Can you hear the Angels? We didn't either.

We found a decent (though expensive) parking garage, and went to wander Chelsea Market while we waited for my appointment time.

I should have taken more pictures of our wandering, but I was too nervous and excited. Every geek bone in my body was vibrating with excitement.
We ate at a nifty hipster vegan sushi place called Beyond Sushi. It was delicious! But, I missed the fish part of sushi. No worries. We also had some vegetarian pizza from a place I cannot remember. We browsed shops, used the most disgusting bathrooms in the universe, and bumped/jostled the hipsters of NYC.

Now, I wish I had taken more pictures of the actual unboxing. It was exciting, and Angela's phone had died on the way... What does that mean? That means for the sake of this entry I will be improvising pictures.

Let's start with the room. We entered a waiting room that was pretty nondescript but with fashionable furniture. At the desk sat a smiling young lady wearing her very own pair of Glass (hers? The companies? No one knows). She took my ID and Angela's and gave us nifty badges.
"Please wear these at all times."
Oh, Hi there Guest Pass!
We sat patiently for about 3 minutes. That is when I met Matt, my Glass tour guide (yup, creeped him on G+ so you could see him). We shook hands and introductions were made. Matt then led us into a chic loft-turned-fitting area.
Classy joint!

As walked in and I was offered the chance to change my mind for my chosen color.
Decisions, decision!
I stuck with Charcoal. Goes with everything.
Off went "Google Employee #4" (I missed his name) to get The Box! Angela and I chatted with Matt about what I planned to do with Glass once I was out in the world. I listed off most things.
Motorcycle riding, roller derby (maybe not during a bout), hiking, vacations, email, day to day use, and the thing I did not mention to him... LARPing. yeah, gonna let my nerd play, too.

So, eventually my white box came. And I was told... "Go ahead, open it up!"
I was like a kid at Christmas. I knew what was in this box. Just what I asked Santa for! And... I was not going to shoot my eye out!!
I opened the box, and magic happened! Angels sang a chorus of Halleluiah, rainbows shot forth, fireworks! Pure Magic!

Okay... maybe not quite. It was more like this:
She is beautiful!
It felt like magic to me, nonetheless!
So, now we began set up. Download app to phone, fit glass to face and begin!
So, fun things I can do right away... send text messages to land lines (boo... I think I fixed that finally) and take some decent pictures. As you can see, all of NYC turned to smile when I said "Okay Glass... Take a Picture" They said "CHEESE!"
"CHEESE"
This view is very popular right now. It's all over the internet! I swear, it is my picture.
So, we also learned how to do video (you'll have to search for it). And then we talked device storage and cloud storage.

Funniest thing about the day (to me) was when Matt was explaining the apps (back at the seat). He got to something called "ELLE" and explained "This is to get the latest fashion updates and ... " he trailed off because I had a People's Eyebrow going. I looked at him, looked down at my ripped khakis, superman t-shirt, hoodie, and then back at him (I was also wearing a bandana). I replied "Yeah... I don't think I need that." It was here I think Matt understood I was just a geeky girl who had a weird and sarcastic sense of humor. A little chuckle.. and on we went with our talks.

Moving on, I asked the weird questions next. "What is the general reaction you have gotten? And what do you suppose the 'norms' will be? We proceeded to discuss the sociological impact of Glass, how it may change things, and how we, the Explorers, are in charge of writing the Etiquette of Glass (and wearable tech).

After a trip to a nice clean bathroom, a glass of water, and another firm handshake... I wore my Glass our of the Building, and we headed to get the car (Gustaf) out of the depths of some parking garage off of 9th Avenue.

Over all, the experience (unboxing) was fun, informative, and a little bit... staged.  Yes, staged.
One thing Angela and I discussed was how they made a real effort to make this $1500 device appealing and the experience chic, exciting, and appealing.
We both commented on the ride home that all of the employees in the building (visible employees) were 20something, fit, and nice to look at. Was that how they got the job? We also comments on how the presentation was very well done. The employees worked like a machine and had answers for everything. I was happy that we got Matt to "be normal" and laugh outside the Google Dome humor (my impeccable fashion sense).

Thus far, I have managed to send 3 more texts to a land line, take 20 or so pictures, delete, read and archive email as well as reply, and take 1 more 10 second video... I deleted that one. Wanted it to be longer.
Tonight, I plan to take a video while I am skating. No contact... just skating. Maybe doing my assessment laps... who knows!

Oh!
Until then... I need to stop writing and finish working. Happy exploring folks!
